Hachiko asks: There’s this dog (a small one) I really want to keep, but my mom won’t let me (In our religion keeping dogs is okay, but they say they’re unpure and better not to keep) and this dog gets beaten by men who work down-stairs. Of course, being a dog, it’s tough for me to talk from the point of view of those who don’t think we’re just the best things around. But I have to acknowledge that they’re out there, and that they have the right to their opinions.
Someday, you’ll be an adult, and you’ll have the right to make decisions for yourself, like whether or not to have a dog as a pet. But for now, you’re right, you can’t have it in your parents’ home. It’s sad, but true.
But there’s another issue here. Which is that you’re witnessing an innocent animal being beaten. That is horrible. I don’t know where you live, but if there are laws there to protect dogs, you might want to call the police on these creeps, to at least get the dog taken away from them. People like that should not be allowed to keep dogs, or any other animals. And there is a strong statistical correlation (big words for a pooch, huh?!) showing that people who abuse animals are very likely to eventually abuse humans, such as a girlfriend, spouse, or, yes, child. So you’d really be doing your world a favor by turning these men in.
But then… what if you don’t have those laws there? What if the police tell you there’s nothing they can do? Maybe even laugh at your feelings? Oh my heart breaks at just the thought of it.
If that’s the case, then I really only have two other thoughts. The first is that there might be an animal welfare organization there, like the SPCA in many countries, that isn’t officially police, but can come in and rescue abused animals. If you can’t figure out if there is one there, feel free to write me about where you live, and I’ll try to find out what I can.
And the other thought is… right where you began, with your parents. Your mother doesn’t want a dog in her home, but if you have no luck with the police or any organizations, maybe she’d be willing to look into finding someone else who’d take the pup, or in some other way help you save it.
I wish I had a guaranteed solution for you Hachiko. The world should be better to animals like that dog than it is. But every time I hear from someone like you, it proves to me that things are getting better, and that slowly the world is becoming a safer and happier place for us. Thank you for your heart, and for caring about that pup. Even if you can’t, in the end, save this one, you are the future, and you glow in my eyes.
