How can a dog help anyone by giving advice?

Rebecca asks: You’re just a dog! How can you ever help me? My problems are getting worser n worser! But thanks anyway, for your concern, and for being on my side. I am happy just for that.

Hi rebecca –

I have one very important answer for you:  You’re right.  I can’t help you a bit.  I can’t come out there and bite the people who are mean to you, and I can’t lay my head on your lap so you can hold me while you cry.  And I certainly can’t change anyone else’s behavior.

But there is one thing I can do, and that’s what I love to do more than anything else:  I can help you to help yourself.

There’s an old saying that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, while if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for his whole lifetime.  Similarly, if I came out there and bit all the jerks in your life, it would be just great for you — for a short time.  But what I want is to help you get stronger and more aware, so that you can handle them yourself. In the long run, that will be way more useful to you.  (Though it would be SOOOOOO satisfying for me to get the occasional bite of backsides!!)

So, thank you for your appreciation.  And thanks for staying in touch.  And please keep it up, so that we can get you stronger and stronger, and happier and happier.

Because when that happens, my tail wags so hard they can feel a breeze a thousand miles away!

Cheers,

Shirelle
