Are dogs happier than people?

Becky asks: Are dogs happier than people? Why?

The difference between dogs and people, in this regard, is that we have much smaller brains.  We don’t have self-consciousness.  No dog has ever created art, no dog has ever laughed at irony, no dog has ever lied.  So when we’re happy, we don’t worry about it as much as people often do.  We don’t have second thoughts about it.  But does that mean we’re happier than people?  We don’t enjoy roller coasters or slapstick movies or playing charades.  And although we do respond to music, it’s not with the same full involvement you guys do.  But how often are you as happy as I am while chasing a bird?

It’s just different.
